Showing Up is gentle comedy/drama co-written and directed by Kelly Reichardt. The film, her fourth collaboration with Michelle Williams, follows an artist for a few days as she prepares and finishes work for a small exhibition of her sculptures. With a deceptively meandering pace, Reichardt transforms the unassuming Williams character – poignantly and astonishingly – into an every person. Through her touching performance we see Williams as a person who, like us, is trying to do her own thing, hampered not just by the near collisions and misses of the clueless, the lost, and mostly the mild narcissists running around like children, but also by the demands of her own love of nature, the compulsion of compassion, and the daily struggle for food, finance and hygiene in an imperfect world.
